To leave someone in the lurch 意為「置某人於困境中而不顧；臨危棄某人而去」。這個慣用語首次使用於 1500 年代，係源於法國一種叫做 lourche 的棋盤遊戲，但這種遊戲到了 1600 年代就不再流行了。遺憾的是，遊戲規則已經失傳，只知道當某個玩家落後其他玩家很多，幾乎沒有獲勝的機會時就說 He or She was put in a lurch。
