Obligated, obliged (adjs.), obligate, oblige (vv.)

He felt obligated [obliged] to visit his parents. By loaning them the money she obligated [obliged] them to make a series of repayments. oblige 也可當不及物動詞,意為「幫忙;施恩惠於」(= do someone a favor):They asked for more time, and I obliged and gave them some.

Obligated 和 obliged 大多以 be/feel obligated/obliged to do something 的型態出現,如上述意為「有義務/有責任做某事」:Employers are legally obligated [obliged] to pay the minimum wage. 此外,obligated 還用於 be/feel obligated to someone (注意:to 是介系詞) 這個片語中,意為「感激某人」: I was obligated to her for her help. 然而,其前若用副詞加強語 much 來修飾,則慣用字變成 obliged 而非 obligated:I’m much obliged to you. (我非常感謝您);尤其是在 “I would be obliged if …”

I’d be much obliged if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d much appreciate it if you could/would give me an interview.
= I’d be most grateful if you could/would give me an interview.
