這三個名詞頗為相似的拼字、用法、意思和發音可能造成混淆，尤其是它們指的都是依靠、求助的對象及賴以得救的辦法、對策或手段：My father is my main resource [recourse, resort] when I’m out of funds. (當我缺錢時，我父親是我的主要資源 [依靠])；Violence was our only resource/recourse/resort. (暴力是我們唯一的手段)。resource 意為「資源；辦法，對策；機智；應變能力」，recourse 意為「依靠，依賴；求助對象；(賴以得救的) 辦法，手段」，而 resort 意為「憑藉，依靠；依靠的東西，憑藉的手段」；resort 還可當動詞用，但無論是名詞或動詞，其後經常接介系詞 to 來表達「訴諸於；求助於」的意思。
在 have recourse/resort to (依靠；訴諸於) 和 without recourse/resort to (不靠；不訴諸於) 等片語中，recourse 和 resort 是同義詞，不能用 resource 來代替。在這些片語中，recourse 比 resort 要來得常用：The system allows doctors to have recourse to specialist opinion. (該制度使醫生能夠聽取專家的意見)；We hope a settlement can be reached without recourse to legal action. (我們希望不必訴諸法律行動就能達成和解)。當動詞用的 resort 亦使用類似的結構：They settled the dispute without recourse to violence. = They settled the dispute without resort to violence. = They settled the dispute without resorting to violence. (他們未訴諸暴力就解決了爭端)。
然而，在 as a last resort/resource (英式英語亦經常寫成 in the last resort) 中，resort 和 resource 可以互換，但卻不能用 recourse 來代替。as a last resort/resource 意為「作為最後手段，最後一招」，其中 resort 比 resource來得常用，也比較合乎習慣用法：As a/In the last resort, we could borrow more money from the bank. (作為最後手段，我們可以向銀行再借些錢)；The government will impose a state of emergency only as a last resort. (政府只有到最後時刻才會實施緊急狀態)。最後要提的是，resort 還有一個名詞的意思是我們經常會見到的，那就是「度假勝地」：There are many summer resorts in the mountains. (山裡有許多避暑勝地)；a ski/skiing resort (滑雪勝地)；a seaside resort (海濱度假勝地)；a health resort (療養地)；a resort island/town (度假島/度假城)。
