這五個形容詞有時會讓人搞混，稍一不慎可能就會發生誤用的情況。antisocial, asocial 和 unsociable 在「不愛交際/社交的；不合群的；孤僻的」意思上是同義詞，如 Jane’s very friendly, but her husband’s rather antisocial/asocial/unsociable. (珍很友善，但她的丈夫有點孤僻)，而 antisocial 和 asocial 在「反社會的：妨礙社會安寧的；違反公益的」意思上又是同義詞，如 Playing music so loud that it annoys everyone in the street is antisocial/asocial. (播放音樂的聲音過大，使街上的每個人都受到干擾，是有礙社會安寧的)；antisocial/asocial behavior (反社會行為)。不過，asocial 現在非常少用，新版的字典甚至已不再列出這個字。
至於 unsocial，或許有些字典還列出這個字有上述的意思，但這些意思對它來說早已「作古」多時。unsocial 現在僅意為「非正常工作時間 (上班) 的」，主要用在 unsocial hours (非正常工作時間) 這個片語中，而 antisocial 和 unsociable 也有這個意思；換言之，antisocial, unsociable 和 unsocial 在「非正常工作時間 (上班) 的」意思上是同義詞，如 As a policeman you often have to work unsocial hours. (身為警察你就得經常在非正常的工作時間上班)；I often work long unsociable hours. (我經常長時間在非一般時段工作)；antisocial work hours. (非正常工作時間)。既然是在非正常的工作時間上班，當然就沒有交際的時間 (sociable hours)，因而影響或妨害到社交生活或社交機會 (social life)。
Nonsocial 意為「非社會性的；非社交性的」，通常用來指行為，如 nonsocial activities (非社交性的活動)。這五個字都是標準英語。
