當動詞時，flounder 意為「處於困境」、「(陷入水、泥、雪等中時) 掙扎；踉蹌；艱難地移動」及「困難地做事、行動等」，如 His career is floundering and the future is uncertain. (他的事業正處於困境，未來還是未知數)；The students were floundering through the deep snow to get to school. (學生踏著厚厚的積雪，跌跌撞撞地上學)。Flounder 指的是掙扎、奮鬥而非完全失敗、一蹶不起。
Founder 意為「(計畫等) 失敗；(船隻等) 沈沒；(房屋、平台等) 塌陷」，如 Plans for a new museum have foundered for lack of funds. (新博物館計畫因缺乏資金而告吹)；Their happiness quickly foundered following the birth of the first child. (第一個小孩出生後，他們的幸福很快就結束了)；The ship struck a reef and foundered. (那艘船撞到暗礁沈沒了)。Founder 通常指完全失敗。
由於掙扎和失敗都有不同程度之分，而失敗往往是掙扎、奮鬥的結果，flounder 和 founder 在使用上密不可分。譬如說，在運動比賽中，被打敗的球隊一定經過掙扎、奮鬥才告敗北，所以 flounder 和 founder 常常一起出現來形容吃敗仗的球隊。然而，由於拼字相近，再加上上述的含意，這兩個字在使用上經常被搞混，使用時不可不慎，如 If Sam is floundering (應為 foundering) in Physics, he had better drop the course; if he is foundering (應為 floundering), he may yet pull through. (如果山姆的物理幾近完全沒救了，他最好放棄這項課程；如果他努力奮鬥，他或許可以度過難關)。
Flounder 和 founder 皆還可當名詞用，但意思與動詞的意思完全無關。Flounder 意為「比目魚」，而 founder 意為「創辦人；創始人」。這兩個字的名詞用法應該不會被搞混。
