Sound 和 voice 都意為「聲音」，是兩個相當常用的字，但含意卻大不同，不能混為一談。譬如說，在 Molly began screaming at the top of her voice. (茉莉扯開嗓門大聲尖叫起來) 這句中，voice 不可用 sound 來替代，因為 voice 表示人發出的聲音。
Sound 是指一切聲響、大自然的任何聲音，亦即人所聽到的任何聲音，如 We can hear the sound of bees. (我們能聽到蜜蜂嗡嗡的聲音)；I heard strange sounds from the basement. (我聽到從地下室傳來各種奇怪的聲音)；The students didn’t make a sound as they left the classroom. (學生悄無聲息地離開了教室)；We could hear the sound of voices/laughter/footsteps. (我們能聽見說話聲/笑聲/腳步聲)。
Voice 是指人發出的聲音、嗓音，如說話、唱歌的聲音或笑聲等，如 Donna is not in good voice. (唐娜現在嗓子不好)；Mary’s voice is very sweet. (瑪麗的聲音很甜)；John has got a bad cold and he has lost his voice. (約翰得了重感冒，他的聲音都沙啞了)；Robin is a man with a soft/deep/loud voice. (羅賓是個聲音柔和/聲音低沈/嗓門很大的男子)。
Voice 除了上述字面的意思外，還經常做比喻用，意為「發言權、表達意見權」，其句型為 to have a voice (in sth.)，如 They have no voice in the matter. (他們對此事沒有發言權)。
