Space 這個字最常見的意思是「空間」，如 The desk takes up a lot of space. (這書桌很佔空間)。另一常見意思是「太空」，如 The astronaut has been living in space for over six months. (那位太空人已在太空生活了六個多月)；visitors from outer space (外太空來的訪客)。至於「空白」的意思亦不時可見，如 Please leave a space here. (請在這裡空一格)。
空間與時間相對，是故，若干字典乃將 time 列為 space 的相反詞。在本文標題中，相信大多數人都會認為 space 的意思也是眾所周知的「空間」。然而，跌破大家眼鏡的是，這個 space 不但不是「空間」，反而是與空間幾乎相反的「持續時間；期間」，亦即一段時間，而英文是 a space of time (= a period of time)，如 It was amazing that the girl was able to solve the difficult problem in such a short space of time. (那女孩能在這麼短的時間內解出這道難題，真是令人驚奇)。
In/Within the space of + 時間的意思是「在…時間內」，這個片語不但常見於口語，在新聞報導中亦經常耳聞，如 He called me twenty times in the space of an hour. (他一小時內打了 20 通電話給我)；Within the space of 24 hours, Bryan had travelled halfway around Taiwan. (在 24 小時內，布萊恩遊歷了半個台灣)。
除 in/within the space of 之外，還有一個亦時有所聞的片語也是由時間含意的 space 所構成，那就是 breathing space。這個片語意為「喘息的時間」，如 The loan shark gave Tom a breathing space of one week before he had to pay back his debt. (高利貸業者給湯姆一個禮拜的喘息時間，之後他就必須還清債務)。雖然 breathing space 亦有「喘息的空間」之意，但這項用法似乎越來越少見。
