Another think coming

Think 是大家所熟悉且每天使用的動詞,但它亦可當名詞用,意為「想」,不過只用在兩個慣用的口語中,一是 to have a think (about something),另一是 to have (got) another think coming。To have a think (about something) I want to have a think about the engagement. (我想仔細考慮訂婚的事);I’ll have to have a think about this before I give you a definite answer.

To have (got) another think coming 根據《牛津英語大辭典》(The Oxford English Dictionary, OED),這成語僅跟 “If you think/he thinks (that) …

  • Jack: If you think I’m going to stand here and listen to your complaining all day, you have another think coming!
Andy: Frankly, I don’t care what you do.
  • Mary: If you think you can get away with it, you’ve got another think coming!
Bill: Get away with what? I didn’t do anything!
  • If you think I’m going to lend you money, you’ve got another think coming.

由於 think 的名詞用法被認為不合文法,一些人在聽到 another think coming 時以為是聽到 another thing coming 並且「以訛傳訛」,再加上 another thing coming 字面上比較有意義,因此 another thing coming 現在比 another think coming 還要常見,如 If he thinks he can use the service free of charge, he has another thing coming. 英國重金屬樂團 Judas Priest (猶太祭司) 就有一首歌曲叫做 “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”。
