這兩個同義成語意為「躺下睡覺；上床睡覺；就寢 (go to bed)」，是頗為常用的口語。它們可能源自西方國家過去的床是用乾草 (hay) 舖成，或用做麻袋 (sack) 的材料做成，抑或床墊裡面都用乾草充填。
自 1900 年代初期以來，hay 這個字在美國就被用來指床 (bed)。美國作家喬治‧艾德 (George Ade) 1902 年在其《People You Know》一書中就寫過 “He crawled into the hay at 9.30 P.M.” (他晚上 9 點半就上床睡覺) 這樣的句子。雖然 to hit the hay 至少在 1900 年代初期就已存在，但 to hit the sack 直到大約 1940 年才出現。
