Junction vs. juncture

Junction 意為「會合，接合；(河流等的) 會合處；(鐵路、捷運等的) 轉乘站；交叉路口；(高速公路系統的) 交流道」，如 at the junction of the two mountain paths (在兩條山路的交接處)。然而，在這些意思當中，跟我們比較有切身關係的應該是轉乘站、交叉路口和交流道。就「交叉路口」而言，Junction 是英國的用法，美式英語通常叫做 intersection，如 That petrol/gas station is at the junction/intersection of two highways. (那個加油站位於兩條公路的交叉路口)。

台灣國道高速公路局所公布的系統交流道英文名稱是 System Interchange，而非 junction，問題是 interchange (交流道) 在國外指的是高架道路與其他公路交匯之處，利用立體交叉與數條匝道組成，引導車輛轉換不同公路的交通設施，與我們所稱的高速公路系統交流道並不相同，高公局為何這樣用頗令人費解！另外，必須注意的是，「高速公路」在英國叫做 motorway，在美國則叫做 freeway 或 expressway，如 There’s a service station near the next motorway/freeway junction. (高速公路下一個交流道附近有一個休息站)。

傳統上，juncture 也有上述 junction 的意思，亦即兩者是同義詞，如 at the juncture of the two mountain paths (在兩條山路的交接處)。但在現代用法中，juncture 通常用來表示「(危急) 時刻；(緊要) 關頭」，如 At this juncture (= now), it is impossible to say whether Mary will marry John. (此時此刻無法確定瑪麗是否會嫁給約翰)；The supporters from both sides began shouting insults at each other. At this critical juncture the police arrived. (雙方的支持者開始互罵。在這緊要關頭/危急時刻，警察來了)。

由於「危急」或「緊要」已含在 Juncture 的「(危急) 時刻；(緊要) 關頭」意思內，因此 critical juncture 中的 critical 可視為贅字，但這一含意似乎未獲得廣泛遵循，因為現今 critical 與 juncture 連用或搭配的情況屢見不鮮，顯示對許多英語人士而言，juncture 僅意為「時刻」。
