大家都知道，come 是「來」，go 是「去」，兩者互為相反詞。一般的認知或中文的含意是，從說話者 (我) 往聽者 (你) 的方向移動是「去」，反之若從聽者往說話者的方向移動是「來」。然而，在英文中，說話者與聽者之間的移動都可以且經常使用 come。例如：
- You can come to my office and discuss the matter. (你可以來我辦公室討論這件事) － 聽者移動到說話者。
- Shall I come to your office at 10 am? (早上十點我「去」你的辦公室好嗎？) － 說話者移動到聽者。
從另一地方移動到說話者或聽者所在的地方也都可以使用 come。例如：
- A salesperson came to my door last night selling shampoos. (一名推銷員昨晚上門來推銷洗髮精) － 另一人移動到說話者。
- Julian is going to come to you on Wednesday if that’s okay. (可以的話，朱利安星期三會「去」找你) － 第三人移動到聽者。
從說話者或聽者所在的地方移動到另一地方都是使用 go，這與中文的含意相當，殆無疑義。例如：
- Can you wait here while I go back to the house to fetch my cellphone? (我回去屋裡拿手機時你可以在這裡等一下嗎？)
- Linda has gone to Japan. (琳達去日本了)
