Can’t/Cannot hold a candle to 意為「比不上 (某人或某物)；無法媲美 (某人或某物)；無法跟 (某人或某物) 相提並論」。這個通常用於否定句的慣用語起源於 1600 年代，當時新進的手工藝學徒往往必須秉燭為正在幹活的師傅或老手提供照明，好讓他們看清楚手上的工作。如果一個人連站在一旁手持一根蠟燭的工作都做不好，那就「了然」了，自是無法跟他人相比。
英國古物研究者 Sir Edward Dering (1598–1644) 在其 1641 年出版的著作《The fower cardinal-vertues of a Carmelite fryar》中使用了類似的片語 “not to hold the candle”。他在書中寫到：”Though I be not worthy to hold the candle to Aristotle.” (雖然我不配和亞里斯多德相提並論)，這是 can’t hold a candle to 已知最早的引句。
