A shot in the dark 意為「(沒有根據的) 瞎猜；姑且一試」。這通常是在其他所有想法都宣告或證明失敗後所採取的最後一招，或是想破頭也不得解時的姑且一試。從這個慣用語的字面意思「在黑暗中看不清楚目標就開槍 (也不知道有沒有射中)」不難理解它為何被比喻為「瞎猜」。
英國大文豪蕭伯納 (George Bernard Shaw) 似乎是第一個使用這項比喻意思的人。1895 年 2 月他在倫敦「週六評論報」(The Saturday Review) 中寫到：”Never did man make a worse shot in the dark.” (人類所作的瞎猜莫此為甚)。
