More 係用來表示數量、金額、程度等的「更大 (的)；更多 (的)；更加」。這個比較級量詞可當形容詞、副詞和代名詞用，可修飾名詞、形容詞、副詞、動詞及介系詞。More 修飾動詞時是位在動詞的後面，除此之外，它都位在其所修飾的詞類的前面。例如：
- I need a few more days to deal with this problem. (我還需要幾天的時間來處理這個問題) － more 當形容詞用修飾可數名詞。
- I would like some more food. (我想再要一些吃的) － more 當形容詞用修飾不可數名詞。
- Cindy couldn’t be more beautiful. (辛蒂非常漂亮) － more 當副詞用修飾形容詞。
- The computer will start more easily and run more smoothly. (電腦將更容易啟動而且運作得更順暢) － more 當副詞用修飾另一副詞。
- You must listen more and talk less! (你必須多聽少說！) － more 當副詞用修飾動詞。
- I couldn’t agree/disagree more. (我完全同意/不同意) － more 當副詞用修飾動詞。
- Who’s more in need of money, you or me? (誰比較需要錢，你還是我？) － more 當副詞用修飾介系詞片語。
More 不可直接接冠詞 (a/an, the)、限定詞 (this, that 等)、所有格 (my, your, his, her 等) 或受格代名詞 (him, her, it 等)，必須先接 of 再接這些詞類。例如：
- He’s more of a scientist than a novelist. (與其說他是個小說家，還不如說他是個科學家)
- You can have more of this delicious cake my sister baked. (你可以吃多一點我姐姐烘焙的這個美味的蛋糕)
- How many more of my siblings have you not met, I wonder? (我不知道我的兄弟姐妹還有多少人你沒有見過？)
- They’re going to see a lot more of him. (他們將比現在更常見到他)
如上述，more 亦可當代名詞用。例如：
- Please tell me more. (請多告訴我一些)
- Instead of fewer divorce cases, there were more. (離婚案件非但沒有減少，反而增多了)
More 還是 longer 呢？
More 可以跟 time 這個字連用來表示「較多時間，更多時間」，但不能單獨使用來表示這項意思，而必須改用 longer。例如：
- Long time no see. (好久不見)
- I’ve been waiting a long time. (我已經等了很久了)
- I need more time to deal with this problem. (我需要更多時間來處理這個問題)
- We’ll wait a bit more and then I’ll call them. (我們會再稍微等一等，還不來的話我會打電話給他們) (誤)
We’ll wait a bit longer and then I’ll call them. (正) - Would you like to stay a little more? (你想留久一點嗎？) (誤)
Would you like to stay a little longer? (正) - I won’t be staying much more. (我不會留很久) (誤)
I won’t be staying much longer. (正)
