Mediator 意為「仲裁者，調解者，調停者」，如 The United States is willing to act as a mediator between Israel and Hamas in a new round of negotiations. (美國願意充當以色列和哈瑪斯新一回合談判的調解者)。
Moderator 意為「仲裁者；(會議、辯論等的) 主持人」，如 The two candidates will hold a series of TV debates. Just the two of them, with no moderator. (這兩位候選人將進行一系列電視辯論。就只有他們兩個，沒有主持人)。
由於這兩個名詞皆有「仲裁者」的意思，若干字典在此意思上將它們列為互為變體，但在書面英文中，這兩個字通常都被限制在它們個別的用法上，亦即 mediator 意為「仲裁者；調解者；調停者」，而 moderator 意為「(會議、辯論等的) 主持人」。
Mediator 和 moderator 都有相應的動詞，分別為 mediate 和 moderate，前者意為「調解，調停，斡旋」，後者意為「主持 (會議、辯論等)」。
