The apple of one’s eye 意為「掌上明珠；心肝寶貝」，是個極為古老的成語，距今已有一千多年的歷史。起初這個成語中的 apple 是指「瞳孔」(pupil of the eye)，表示某人對自己非常重要，猶如自己的眼珠一樣珍貴。這成語都位在 BE 動詞之後，但不可寫成 the apple of the eye of someone。此外，eye 恆為單數。
The apple of one’s eye 於西元 885 年首次出現在古英語 (Old English)，也就是出現在被認為是盎格魯撒克遜英格蘭時期的威塞克斯王國國王阿佛烈大帝 (King Alfred the Great) 的作品《Gregory’s Pastoral Care》中。
在數百年後的 1600 年，莎士比亞在其浪漫喜劇《仲夏夜之夢》(A Midsummer Night’s Dream) 中使用了這個成語：”Flower of this purple dye, Hit with Cupid’s archery, Sink in apple of his eye”。此外，它也多次出現在《詹姆士王聖經》(King James Bible) 中。
這個成語因上述的起源而為人所知，但卻是在蘇格蘭著名小說家華特˙史考特爵士 (Sir Walter Scott) 在其 1816 年出版的小說《Old Mortality》中用了此成語後才開始被一般民眾更廣泛地應用於日常生活中。
