但馬羅在《The Passionate Shepherd to His Love》中所寫的 beds of roses，是指早在 1200 年代就已存在的真實的玫瑰花壇。這個慣用語於 1635 年才開始用作比喻，表示稱心如意的處境、快意人生的意思，但通常用於否定句，即 something or life is not a bed of roses。
