國內研究所多用 graduate institute, 如國立師範大學翻譯研究所用 Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation。輔仁大學翻譯研究所也是用 Graduate Institute (Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation Studies)。國外研究所則多用graduate school。
國內所系合一之後，不再有所，所以碩士班、博士班都設在系內，如英語系碩士班、博士班就寫成：M.A. Program, English Department; Ph.D. Program, English Department。中國文學系碩士班：M.A. Program, Department of Chinese Literature; Ph.D. Program, Department of Chinese Literature。只有研究所而沒有系的學門，才稱為研究所，如前面所提到的師大翻譯研究所及輔大翻譯研究所。
至於目前大行其道，人數越來越多的在職專班，英文叫做 On-the-Job Training Program。
