Down to the wire 意為「直到最後一刻」。這個慣用語於 1901 年首次出現在加拿大裔美國幽默作家暨劇作家喬治‧韋爾‧霍巴特 (George Vere Hobart) 所著的《Down the Line with John Henry》一書中。此慣用語源於 19 世紀末期的美國賽馬，起初它只有字面意思，但很快就在大約 1900 年出現比喻意思，成為英文的日常用語。
在 19 世紀末期的美國賽馬，主辦單位都會在賽道終點線兩端的上方拉一條線 (wire)，方便更準確地判定勢均力敵、平分秋色的馬匹何者獲勝。Down to the wire 中的 “down to” 其實與 “up to” 的意思一樣，所以整個片語的字面意思就是「交由那條線來決定」。
