Historic 意為「歷史性的；歷史上著名的；有歷史意義的，歷史上有重大意義 (或影響) 的」，如 a historic election (歷史性的選舉)；a historic occasion (歷史性的時刻或場合)；the historic summit between two Koreas (南北韓歷史性高峰會)；Waterloo is a historic battlefield. (滑鐵盧是歷史上著名的戰場)。
Historical 意為「(有關) 歷史的；歷史學的」，如 historical research (史學研究)；a historical society (歷史學會)。這個字還意為「(基於) 史實的；反映歷史事件的」(指過去確實存在或發生過的人物或事件，以別於小說杜撰或傳說的人物或事件)，如 a historical character (歷史人物，如孫文、雷根)；a historical play/novel (歷史劇/歷史小說 － 以史實為題材的戲劇、小說)；The president’s visit to the town was not a historic occasion; it is of historical interest only. (總統巡視該鎮並非歷史性事件，只是具有歷史價值罷了)。
雖然這兩個字可能接相同的名詞，但從上述可知它們的意思是有明顯差別的。例如：A historical event 是指歷史上確實發生過的事件，而 a historic event 是指對歷史有重大意義或影響的事件。所以，哥倫布之發現新大陸既是 historical 也是 historic。
然而，有些名詞如 building (建築物)，site (遺址，古蹟) 則只能用 historic 來修飾，不能用 historical。國內許多人 － 包括為數不少的大學系所和機構 － 將「歷史建築」譯為 historical buildings，這是不對的，試問這些建築那個不是確實存在過，難道它們是虛擬的嗎? 所謂的「歷史建築」是指具有歷史意義或歷史上著名的建築，所以 historical buildings 應改為 historic buildings，即意為「古建築；具有歷史意義或歷史上著名的建築」。同樣地，sites 也只能用 historic 來修飾，也就是 historic sites (歷史遺址/歷史古蹟)，因為它們強調的是「具有歷史意義」，所以不能寫成 historical sites，否則就錯了；不過，如果歷史學家 (historians) 對它們有興趣，它們就具有歷史 (研究) 價值了 (of historical interest)。
