A：To 除了當介系詞和不定詞外，還可用作副詞。在 If we all set to, we should be able to finish this in a few hours. (如果我們全部賣力去做，我們應可在數小時內完成這項工作) 這句中，set to 中的 to 顯然是當副詞用，因為它沒有接名詞、代名詞或動名詞，所以不是介系詞，而且也未接原形動詞，因此亦非不定詞。
當副詞用的 to 大多與動詞構成片語動詞 (phrasal verbs)，它有下列幾個意思：
1. (做) 起來；著手。例如：
- If we all set to, we should be able to finish this in a few hours. (如果我們全部賣力去做，我們應可在數小時內完成這項工作) － 片語動詞 set to 意為「賣力地做；大幹起來」。
- Jack and his family fell to with great relish. (傑克和他的家人津津有味地吃了起來)
- The meal’s all ready, you guys, fall to! (飯菜都準備好了，你們啊，吃飯吧!) － 片語動詞 fall to 意為「著手；開始 (做)」。
2. 甦醒；恢復意識。例如：
- Don’t worry! She faints all the time. She always comes to after a few minutes. (別擔心! 她經常昏倒。她都會在幾分鐘後甦醒過來)
- Rachel came to after a while. (過了一會兒瑞秋甦醒了) － 這意思的 to 僅跟 come 連用來構成片語動詞 come to，意為「甦醒」。
3. 向前 (forwards)。例如：
- The swing rocked to and fro. (鞦韆來回擺動)
- That pendulum swung to and fro. (那鐘擺來回擺動) － 這意思的 to 僅跟 fro (向後，backwards) 連用來構成副詞片語 to and fro，意為「來回地；往復地」。值得一提的是，雖然 to and fro 中的 to 相當於 forwards，而 fro 相當於 backwards，但 to and fro 卻不等於 forwards and backwards，而是等於 backwards and forwards，因為後者為英文的慣用語，如 The president began to pace backwards and forwards. (總統開始來回踱步)。
4. 從近處；在近旁。例如：
- The quantity is imprecise but fairly close to correct. (這數量不正確但相當接近)
- My father looks much older when I see him from close to. (當我從近處看我父親時，他顯得蒼老多了) － 這意思的 to 僅跟 close 連用來構成副詞片語 close to，其中 close 也是副詞。
5. (門等) 在關上的位置。例如：
- The wind blew the door to. (風把門吹得關上了)
- I pulled/pushed the window to. (我把窗戶拉上了/關上了)
