Able 和 capable 這兩個形容詞都有「能的；有能力的；能幹的」意思，但它們並非完全同義詞，通常不能互換，尤其是在固定用語中。譬如說，在 He’s able to play the fiddle. (他會拉小提琴) 中，able 不能用 capable 來替換，因為 able 後接不定詞，強調的是行動或實行方面的能力。
Able 意為「能的；有能力的；能幹的」，表示有足夠的 (體力、力氣、智慧、才能、時間、金錢等) 去做某事，著重於行動或實行方面的能力，如 Her daughter was able to play chess when she was three. (她女兒三歲時就會下西洋棋)；Professor Chen should be able to come tomorrow. (陳教授明天應該能來)；John is hardly able to read or write. (約翰幾乎不識字)；Benjamin is an academically able student. (班傑明是個學術能力很強的學生)。
