與 flammable 和 inflammable 的情況一樣，habitable 和 inhabitable 並非相反詞，而是同義詞，意為「可居住的，適合居住的」，如 Their damp house was hardly habitable/inhabitable. (他們那間潮濕的房子簡直不能住人)；a habitable/an inhabitable area (可居住的地區)。
這兩個字的相反詞為 uninhabitable (= not habitable)，意為「無法居住的，不適宜居住的」，如 If there’s no roof then the house is uninhabitable. (如果沒有屋頂，那麼這房子就不適合居住了)；雖然一些大部頭字典還列出 unhabitable 也是它們的相反詞，但後者在實際的應用上非常少見，甚至被視為錯誤 (具有拼字檢查功能的軟體如 Microsoft Word 也視之為拼錯的字，會在其下顯示紅色底線)，所以還是少用為妙。
