Go against the grain 意為「違反常理；不合常情；與…格格不入；不正常」，首次出現在莎士比亞寫於 1607 年的戲劇《科利奧蘭納斯》(Coriolanus，又譯《大將軍寇流蘭》，是莎士比亞撰寫的一部歷史悲劇，講述羅馬英雄科利奧蘭納斯因脾氣暴躁，被逐出羅馬的故事)。然而，一般認為，這個成語在此之前就已經存在。
Go against the grain 中的 grain 並非「穀粒，穀物，穀類」，而是「(木，石，織物等的) 紋理」。這個成語後接不定詞，即 go against the grain to do something，意為「做某事是違反常情的」。
