Bail 可當名詞和動詞用，有多個意思。當名詞時，bail 意為「(板球) 三柱門上的橫木；(壺、桶等的) 半圓形拎環；保釋；保釋金」等，其中以「保釋；保釋金」的意思最常見，它所構成的數個片語都值得學起來，如 on bail (交保)、to post bail (付保釋金)、to be freed/released on bail (交保獲釋)、to grant (or remand)/refuse sb. bail (准許/拒絕交保)、to jump/skip bail (棄保潛逃) 等。
Bail 當動詞時意為「保釋」，通常用被動態，如 All the suspects were bailed. (所有嫌犯都被保釋了)。
Bale 亦可當名詞和動詞用。當名詞時，bale 意為「(紙、棉花或乾草等的) 大捆、大包」，如 a hay bale (一捆乾草)；bales of old newspaper (數捆舊報紙)。當動詞時，bale 意為「把…綁成大捆、大包」。
這兩個字似乎毫無關連，充其量只是同音而已。然而，當它們與 out 連用來構成 bail out 和 bale out 時，這兩個片語動詞 (前者為美式英語，後者為英式英語) 卻有兩個完全一樣的意思：1.「自 (船) 舀出水來 (以免船沈沒)」，如 The boat was leaking so they had to bail/bale it out. (船滲水進來，他們必須把水舀出來以免船沈沒)；2.「(飛機即將墜毀) 跳傘或跳機 (逃生)」，如 The pilot managed to bail/bale out of the burning plane. (飛行員成功跳傘，逃出起火燃燒的飛機)。
除了上述意思外，bail out 還有兩個意思相當常用：1.「對 (個人、公司企業) 紓困，金援；使從…中擺脫出來 (不一定提供財務援助)」，如 The government has already bailed the company out once before. (政府之前已經對該公司紓困過一次)；2.「(用錢) 保釋」，如 Linda’s father got a lawyer and bailed her out. (琳達的父親請律師把她保釋出來)。
