Have egg on one’s face

Have egg on one’s face (或 With egg on one’s face) 意為「(某人) 丟臉,(某人) 出醜」。這是個美國慣用語,但確切的起源無從考證。注意:在此慣用語中,egg 恆用單數,其前並無不定冠詞 an。

一個可能的起源係追溯到 1800 年代期間及 1900 年代初期流行的劇院。水準以下的演員經常被觀眾丟擲雞蛋和腐爛的蔬果,所以最終往往以臉上沾滿蛋液或蛋渣收場。
