Foot the bill 意為「付帳單」，其中 foot 當動詞用，與 pay 同義，意思是「支付 (帳單或費用)」，其後亦可接 cost 或 expense 等字當受詞。

Foot the bill 這個慣用語源自 1500 年代首次使用的片語 foot up (to)，此片語的意思為「總計，累計」。到了 1800 年代初期，foot up 變成今天的型態，即 foot the bill，儘管意思有所不同，但概念相近。
