這兩個字皆意為「令人滿意的」，如 He could not provide a satisfactory excuse for his being late. (他對自己的遲到提不出令人滿意的理由)；The result is satisfying. (結果令人滿意)。既然意思相同，那麼它們豈非同義詞? 非也! 因為它們令人滿意的「程度」有頗大的差異。
Satisfactory 令人滿意的程度只是「尚可，差強人意」(acceptable, adequate, only just good enough, but not extremely good) 而已，而 satisfying 令人滿意的程度已達「心滿意足」(extremely good, meeting your needs or requirements)。例如：A satisfactory meal 是指這頓飯尚可，吃起來還算差強人意，而 a satisfying meal 則是指這頓飯非常豐盛，讓人吃起來心滿意足。
由於這兩個形容詞在許多情況中皆可修飾同一名詞，如 a satisfactory/satisfying arrangement/conclusion/meal/result (令人滿意的安排/結論/飯菜/結果)，因此，唯有掌握它們之間的語意差異，方能適切地表達其真正的意含。譬如說，一般手機和智慧型手機 (smartphones) 相比之下，前者帶給使用者的「滿足感」充其量只能用 satisfactory feeling 來表示，而後者予人的「滿足感」，用 satisfying feeling 來表示，應是八九不離十了!
