Fire in the hole

Fire in the hole 是指在炸彈、手榴彈或燃燒中的車輛等即將爆炸時所發出的一種警告，意思相當於「快要爆炸了」，如 I heard someone yelling, “Fire in the hole! Fire in the hole!” followed by a loud noise. (我聽到有人高喊「快要爆炸了！快要爆炸了！」，接著是一聲轟然巨響)。有人將它誤為 fire in the hold，可能是 hole 跟 hold 的發音相近的關係。

Fire in the hole 源於美國的煤礦場。在礦場中，礦工須使用炸藥來炸開岩石，由於炸藥是在狹小的空間內被引爆，因此礦工在引爆炸藥之前都會大聲高喊 “fire in the hole” 來警告同僚快點找掩護。事實上，美國採礦法規要求在引爆炸藥之前必須高喊三次的 “fire in the hole”。

現今 fire in the hole 已被美國軍方用來警告彈藥即將爆炸，而美國航空暨太空總署 (NASA) 則用它來指多級火箭 (multi-stage rockets) 的點火發射升空。此外，fire in the hole 有時亦被當俚語用，意為「小心，當心，注意」(watch out)，如 Fire in the hole! There is danger ahead. (小心！前面有危險)。
