Put the cart before the horse 意為「本末倒置；前後或順序顛倒」。這個諺語的比喻用法可追溯到 1500 年代，但羅馬晚期的哲學家、政治家暨作家西塞羅 (Cicero，西元前 106 年 1 月 3 日 － 西元前 43 年 12 月 7 日) 在其著作之一的《論友誼》(On Friendship) 中就已使用了這個諺語：”We put the cart before the horse, and shut the stable door when the steed is stolen, in defiance of the old proverb.” (我們把馬車放在馬的前面，駿馬被偷後才關上馬廄的門，違反了這個古諺的寓意)。有趣的是，西塞羅稱 put the cart before the horse 為古諺，顯示這項比喻用法在他所在的年代之前就已廣為人知。

Let one’s hair down

說明：a fate worse than death 是個成語，首次出現在大約 1810 年，但在美國作家愛德加‧萊斯‧巴勒斯 (Edgar Rice Burroughs) 所創作的《人猿泰山》(Tarzan of the Apes) 一書於 1914 年出版後變得廣為人知。這個成語雖亦可用來表示字面意思，如 Death row is a fate worse than death. (死囚等待行刑生不如死)，但現今大多被當作詼諧、幽默用語，用來表示極其難受的事、極不愉快的經歷、活受罪。

To put a flea in someone’s ear 和 put a bug in someone’s ear 分別為英式英語和美式英語成語。乍看之下，它們的意思應該相近，或甚至一樣，因為兩者只有一字之差，而且 flea (跳蚤) 和 bug (臭蟲) 都是不好的蟲子。其實不然，它們的意思完全不一樣。

To put a flea in someone’s ear 意為「嚴厲批評某人；痛斥某人」，有時我們亦會見到 to send someone away/off with a flea in their ear 這樣的用法，意思是說用難聽的話氣走某人，其中 flea in someone’s ear 就是「尖刻的責備；刺耳、難聽的話」。這個英國成語源自 14 世紀法國一個意為使某人性慾高漲的用語。這個法國用語進入英語後逐漸演變成現在的意思。

To put a bug in someone’s ear 意為「給某人一個暗示；給某人一個建議」，主要目的是在提供某人一些訊息，希望他們採取行動或決定行動方針，其中 bug in someone’s ear 就是「暗示；建議」。這個美國成語同樣源自上述的 14 世紀法國用語。

Read between the lines 意為「看出字裡行間的意思；瞭解言外之意；聽懂弦外之音」。這個成語可能源自一項保密措施。在古代，為了傳達某一不想讓別人知道的訊息，往往使用隱形墨水 (invisible ink) 將該訊息寫在一般的信件中，收信人必須將羊皮紙加熱或塗上某種溶液才能看到隱藏的訊息。

隱形墨水的使用可追溯到遠至古希臘。Read between the lines 的字面意思於 1800 年代中期變成現今的成語意思。

The point of no return 意為「(行動、決定等) 沒有退路的地步；無法回頭的地步；欲罷不能的時刻」。這個成語源於二次世界大戰，字面意思為「不能回航點」，指的是當飛機飛到某處時，由於燃料已消耗得差不多，剩餘的燃料不敷返回原地，只得繼續前進。不能回航點又稱為飛航極限點或臨界點。

The point of no return 的比喻意思首次出現在美國作家約翰‧馬奎恩 (John P. Marquand) 1949 年出版的同名小說《Point of No Return》。百老匯 1951 年上演的一齣戲劇，是使這個成語「飛入尋常百姓家」成為一般用語的主要助力。

To gild the lily 意為「畫蛇添足；多此一舉」，其中動詞 gild 意為「把…鍍金；給…塗上金色 (或金箔)」，而 lily 為「百合花」。這個成語源自錯誤引用莎士比亞戲劇的文句。莎士比亞 1595 年撰寫的歷史劇《約翰王》(King John) 中有一句這樣寫道：”To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, to throw a perfume on the violet… is wasteful and ridiculous excess.” (給金子鍍上金箔，給百合塗上顏色，給紫羅蘭噴灑香水 … 都是多此一舉)。1895 年美國俄亥俄州紐華克的地方報《Newark Daily Advocate》在引用 “To gild refined gold, to paint the lily…” 時竟將這一名句誤植為 “One may gild the lily and paint the rose…”。有趣的是，這一引用錯誤從此以訛傳訛，沿用至今。

A fly in the ointment 意為「美中不足之處；令人掃興的人或事」。這個成語最有可能源自舊約聖經的傳道書 (Ecclesiastes)。在 1611 年翻譯和出版的《欽定版聖經》(Authorized Version) － 又稱《詹姆士王譯本》(King James Version) 或《詹姆士王聖經》(King James Bible) － 傳道書第十章第 1 節中，有一段文字這樣敘述：”Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.” (死蒼蠅使做香[料者]的膏油散發臭氣；同樣，一點愚昧也能敗壞智慧和尊榮 － 中文版翻譯)。

說明：To rob Peter to pay Paul 這個成語於大約 1382 年首次出現在英國哲學家約翰‧威克里夫 (John Wycliffe) 的著作中。舉凡挖 (或拆) 東牆補西牆、借新債還舊債等類似的意思都可用它來表示。有關這成語的起源有多種說法，其中之一是，英國國教會挪用倫敦聖彼得教堂 (St. Peter’s Church。注意：梵諦岡聖伯多祿大教堂是 St. Peter’s Cathedral) 的資產來支付倫敦聖保羅大教堂 (St. Paul’s Cathedral) 的修繕費用。

To grin like a Cheshire cat 意為「露齒嘻笑；咧嘴傻笑」。根據定義，你必須笑得連牙齦都露出來，就像無尊那種笑，才可用這個成語來表示。Grin like a Cheshire cat 這個成語因《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》(Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland，通常簡稱為 Alice in Wonderland) 而廣為流行。這部兒童文學作品是英國數學家查爾斯‧路特維奇‧道奇森以筆名路易斯‧卡羅 (Lewis Carroll) 在 1865 年出版的，但卡羅並非創造這個成語的人。Grin like a Cheshire cat 比《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》還早出現至少六、七十年。

Cheshire cat 是《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》中一隻總是咧嘴而笑的貓，有點神秘莫測難以捉摸，牠的笑讓人覺得有些緊張不安。Cheshire (柴郡) 是英格蘭一個以牛奶和乳酪聞名的郡，難怪該郡的貓會笑得合不攏嘴。從 1800 年代初期開始，柴郡的貓為何都被畫成咧嘴而笑的模樣，有諸多不同的傳說，其中最引人入勝的傳說是，有一塊乳酪被做成貓的形狀。該塊乳酪被人從貓的尾巴一直吃到貓的頭部，最後一口吃下的是貓的笑臉。販賣乳酪的人如何說服顧客採用他們吃乳酪的方式，從貓的尾巴一直吃到貓的頭部，最後再吃下貓的笑臉，則沒有記載。
