To push the envelope 意為「挑戰尺度；挑戰極限；超越極限；逾越限度」。這個用語在 1980 年代初期美國作家兼新聞記者湯姆‧沃爾夫 (Tom Wolfe) 所著的寫實性小說《真材實料》(The Right Stuff) 出版後變得廣為人知。1983 年上映的美國電影《太空先鋒》(又譯《太空英豪》、《太空英雄》) 就是改編自這部同名小說。
該小說記敘了美國一群在愛德華空軍基地 (Edwards Air Force Base) 從事高速飛行器試驗的試飛員，以及他們之中有些人日後被挑選為美國載人航太計畫「水星計畫」的太空人的故事。沃爾夫在引述這些飛行員的話時使用了 “pushing the outside of the envelope” 來形容挑戰速度記錄及超越其他偉大的飛行事蹟。這個用語中的 envelope 並非「信封」而是指 flight envelope (飛行包線，指飛行器的飛行速度、高度或性能的極限)。
Push the envelope 最有可能起源於二次世界大戰期間的美國飛行員。在沃爾夫的《真材實料》出版後，push the envelope 成為日常生活使用的慣用語，且大多用來表示上述的比喻意思。
