The lesser of two evils (或 the lesser evil) 意為「兩害相權取其輕」(the less unpleasant of two bad choices)，原為古希臘的諺語，於 1300 年代末期出現在英文中。英國中世紀最傑出的詩人傑佛瑞˙喬叟 (Geoffrey Chaucer) 在其史詩作品《Troilus and Criseyde》(注意：別與莎士比亞的悲劇作品《Troilus and Cressida》搞混) 中使用了這個成語。
The lesser of two evils 最初僅用來指道德上的選擇，但現在當需要在兩件不好的事情、兩個不好的人或兩種不好的情況中作一選擇時都可用這個成語，意思與進退維谷、進退兩難或左右為難有些相似，而英文至少還有四個成語的意思與此相近，它們是 “between a rock and a hard place”、”on the horns of a dilemma”、”between the devil and the deep blue sea” 和 “between Scylla and Charybdis”。
