Mix, blend, combine, merge, mingle (vv.)

這幾個動詞均意為「混合」,其中以 mix 用得最為普遍。Mix 是指兩種或兩種以上的物質或物品混在一起成為一種混合物,其中各成分混合得很均勻、一致,很難分開,但多少仍保有原來的特性等,如 The baker mixed flour, yeast and water to make bread. (麵包師傅將麵粉、發酵粉和水混在一起來做麵包);The workmen mixed sand, gravel, and cement to make concrete. (工人把沙、石子和水泥混合成混凝土);Oil doesn’t mix with water. (油和水不能混合)。

Blend 通常指按一定比例混合調製出一種具有特殊味道、香氣或其他效果的混合物,其中各成分已不復單獨存在,但此混合物仍具有各成分的性質,如 I’d like to drink the whisky she blended. (我想要喝她調好的威士忌);You must blend the flour and eggs and sugar together before you make cakes. (你須先把麵粉、雞蛋和糖混合起來才能製作蛋糕);The sweetness of the yoghurt blends nicely with the sharpness of the lemons. (優酪乳的甜味和檸檬的酸味調和得非常好)。

Combine 是指將兩種或兩種以上的東西結合在一起,它們彼此結合或產生化學反應形成化合物,但仍保持自己的特性,並可在合適的條件下再度分離或分開,如 The two small shops combined to make a large one. (這兩家小店結合起來成為一家大商店);Hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water. (氫與氧化合成水);The minerals in hard water combine with soap to form a scum. (硬水中的礦物質與肥皂化合成浮渣)。

Merge 是指一種東西被另一種東西吸收而消失或兩種東西融合為一而各成分的特性均消失在整體中,如 the place where two roads merge (兩條路會合的地方);The insect merges with its surroundings. (這昆蟲與周圍環境融成一體);Small publishers were forced to merge with larger companies. (小出版社被迫跟較大的公司合併);Her work and life merge into one another. (她的工作和生活相互交織在一起);Our bank merged with theirs. (我們的銀行跟他們的合併了)。

Mingle 是指不同來源、不同顏色或不同溫度的液體混合在一起或指兩種東西,尤指情緒,混合後各成分仍保有各自的特性,能區別出來,如 The fresh water of the Amazon mingles with the salt water of the South Atlantic. (亞馬遜河的淡水和南大西洋的鹹水混合在一起);The waters of the two streams mingled near the bridge. (兩條溪流的水在橋的附近匯合了);It was a cry that mingled fright with surprise. (那是一聲夾著恐懼與驚訝的喊叫);Ted felt hope mingled with fear. (泰德感覺希望與恐懼交織在一起)。
