Center, middle (nn.)

這兩個名詞都可以指空間的中央、中間，但含意不盡相同，而兩者在其他「中」字的意思上更是大異其趣，使用時不可不慎，如 My wife lived in the middle of Taiwan. (我太太以前住在台灣中部)，句中 middle 不可用 center 來代替，因為 middle 有「(國家或地區之) 中部」的意思，但 center 則無。

Center 意為「中心；中央」，係表示有確定邊緣或形狀之物體的中心點 (如圓、球體或方形等物體的正中心)、空間位置的中央或中心或表示學術、工業、商業等比喻用法的「中心」，如 Taipei is not only the center of politics and economy for Taiwan but also gradually developing as the center of world economy. (台北不僅是台灣的政經中心，而且也逐漸發展成為世界經濟中心)；Kevin stood in the center of a large group. (凱文站在一大群人的中央)；This is the center of the circle. (這是圓心)。

Middle 意為「中部；中間；在…當中」，是指地理位置的中部、空間位置的中間，或指時間、活動等的中間、中途，亦即在…當中，如 My father went on a business trip to the middle of Vietnam in the middle of January. (我父親一月中旬到越南中部出差)；A Mercedes Benz was driving right in the middle of the road. (一輛賓士行駛在路的正中間)；Amy was taken ill suddenly in the middle of a meeting. (艾美開會開到一半突然病倒了)；The pouring rain began in the middle of the night. (半夜下起了傾盆大雨)。

就空間的中央、中間而言，middle 的位置不若 center 來得精確。Center 表示空間位置的正中央或中心，而 middle 是表示空間位置的中間，但不一定是正中央，如 Sam’s standing in the center of the classroom. (山姆站在教室的正中央)；Sam’s standing in the middle of the classroom. (山姆站在教室的中間) (不一定是正中央)。此外，center 前面的介詞可用 at 或 in，而 middle 僅能用 in，如 There is a big table at/in the center of the school cafeteria. (學校餐廳中央有張大桌子)。
