A：當 president 後面緊接一國總統的名字時要大寫，但其後若未緊接名字，只是指總統，則不大寫。例如：
- U.S. President Barack Obama cannot run for his third term. (美國總統歐巴馬不能競選第三任) (正)
- The politician has decided not to run for President next year. (那位政治人物已決定明年不出馬角逐總統寶座) (誤) － 這裡的 president 是個普通名詞，不可大寫。
- Thousands of people demonstrated against President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday. (數以千計的民眾昨天示威抗議馬英九總統) (正)
- There are a few people in Taiwan who usually criticize their president. (台灣有一些人經常批評他們的總統) (正)
- Chen Shui-bian, the former Taiwan President, has been bailed out for medical treatment. (台灣前總統陳水扁已保外就醫) (誤) － 這裡的 president 並非官銜而是一個意思為「總統」的普通名詞，所以不大寫。
對於公司和組織的 president (董事長、總裁) 以及大學的 president (校長)，當它是後面緊接人名的頭銜時，有些刊物 (包括許多美國刊物) 會將它大寫。但其他刊物 (包括許多英國刊物) 對於公司、組織和大學等的 president 則都不大寫。顯然地，這沒有規則可尋。一般而言，比較安全的做法是，除非它是後面緊接人名的一國總統，否則 president 都不大寫。
至於 presidential，那更沒有理由大寫，除非它位在句子開頭的第一個字或是某個專有名詞的一部份，如美國的 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (數學和科學卓越教學總統獎)。
就 vice president 而言，當它後面緊接一國副總統的名字時一定大寫，如 U.S. Vice President Joe Biden (美國副總統拜登)。當 vice president 是指公司和組織的副董事長、副總裁、大學的副校長或其他機構的類似頭銜時，平面刊物鮮少大寫，但在各該公司、組織和大學的正式文件中通常大寫。
當 vice president 是正式職稱的一部份時，也要大寫，如Vice President of Marketing (企業行銷副總裁)、Vice President of Investor Relations (投資人關係副總裁)。若 vice president 後面未緊接名字且不是正式職稱的一部份，那麼都不大寫，如 They escorted the vice president to a safe and secret location. (他們護送副總統到一處安全且秘密的地點)。
在美國以外的國家，vice president 在所有應用中都會加上連字號，即 vice-president。美國的出版品通常不加連字號，但 vice-presidential 都會加上連字號，因為它是個片語形容詞。順便一提的是，我們找不到 vice-presidential 要大寫的理由。
然而，上述有關 vice president 的說明都不是既定的規則，因為不同的寫作者和刊物有不同的偏好。譬如說，在加拿大、英國和澳洲的刊物，很容易找到正式職稱不大寫而 vice president 不加連字號的實例，有時甚至會看到 vice president 後面緊接名字卻沒有大寫的情況。
