Answer 和 reply 這兩個動詞都有「回答，回應」的意思，但兩者的含意不盡相同，不能互換。譬如說，在 I sent in my job application letter and the company replied at once. (我將求職函送去，那公司立即答覆) 這句中，replied 不可用 answered 來代替，因為 reply 指較正式且經過考慮而作出的答覆。
Answer 意為「(動詞) 回答，回應；(名詞) 回答，答案」，為一般常用字，可指以口說、書寫或行動對他人的請求、詢問、質問等所作出之回答或回應，如 Amy’s waiting for an answer to her letter. (艾美正在等候回信)；We’re still waiting for them to answer. (我們還在等他們答覆)；I said good night to my daughter but she gave no answer. (我對我女兒道晚安，但她毫無反應)。
Reply 意為「(動詞) 回答，回應；(名詞) 回答，答覆」，為比較正式的用詞，較少用於口語，且是經過考慮所作出的答覆，如 I received no reply to my request. (我的要求沒有獲得任何答覆)；My boss did not reply to my new proposal. (我老闆對我的新建議沒有作出答覆)；My only reply to his unreasonable request is a shrug of the shoulders. (我對他不合理要求的唯一回應就是聳聳肩)。
Answer 和 reply 都可用作動詞和名詞，且兩者均後接介系詞 to (不能用 of)。如上述，它們的差別在於 answer 可指口說、書寫或行動之回答或回應，而 reply 是指較正式且經過考慮而作出的答覆。試比較下面兩句：
- I answered his letter. (我給他回了信) － 我在信中會提到已收到他的信。
- I replied to his letter. (我給他回了信) － 我在信中會針對他提出的問題作出答覆。
另外，answer 除表示「回答」外，亦可表示接聽 (電話) 或應 (門)，但 reply 則無這些用法。例如：
- I answered her telephone. (我接了她的電話)
- My husband answered the door. (我先生應聲去開門)
