Skeleton in the closet/cupboard 意為「(不可外揚的) 醜事，家醜，隱情」。這個成語是在 1800 年代初期首次出現在英格蘭，當時的形式是 (a) skeleton in the closet。然而，skeleton in the closet 現在主要是美式英語的用法，而英式英語大多使用 skeleton in the cupboard，因為 closet 在英國是指「盥洗室，廁所」(water closet, lavatory)，而非「衣櫥，櫥櫃」。不過，無論是廁所或衣櫥，都是家裡可以藏匿死人骨頭或骸骨 (skeleton) 的地方。
這個成語的起源無從考證，比較多人支持的說法是，它源自英國惡名昭彰的搶奪屍體時代。在 1832 年之前，英國的「解剖法」(Anatomy Act) 允許更廣泛地使用屍體來做醫學研究，搶來的屍體當然要藏起來，一來可以避免屍體再度被搶，二來可以防止搶奪屍體這種不名譽的事被人發現。
Skeleton in the closet/cupboard 的複數分別為 skeletons in the closet 和 skeletons in the cupboard。值得一提的是，美國 1960 年代開始使用的 come out of the closet (出櫃) (亦可簡單地說 come out) 係衍生自 skeleton in the closet。然而，在英國，沒有人使用 come out of the cupboard 來表示同性戀者公開自己的同志身份；換言之，「出櫃」只能用 come out of the closet 來表示，並無 come out of the cupboard 的說法。
