Gantlet 和 gauntlet 是同一個字的兩種拼法。Gantlet 是最初的拼法，意為「夾道鞭笞的刑罰 (兩排人面對面站著，手持棍棒或其他武器，命令受罰者從其中間跑過去，他們棍棒鞭子齊飛同時鞭打他)」。這個字來自早期英語的 gantlope，而後者又來自瑞典語的 gatlopp (gata 意為「巷子」，而 lopp 意為「方向，逃跑」)。
Gauntlet 是 gantlet 的另一種拼法，但它也有幾個自己的定義，大多與手套有關，指的是「長手套；防護手套」或「(舊時士兵戴的) 鐵護手套」。
目前有三個與 gauntlet 有關的成語還頗為常用，它們分別是 run the gauntlet (of) (受到批評、指責；遭受打擊)、throw down the gauntlet ([向某人] 提出挑戰) 和 pick up/take up the gauntlet (接受挑戰)，如 The government has been running the gauntlet of the press. (政府一直受到新聞界的抨擊)。
Gantlet 是早期使用 run the gauntlet 時較多人採用的拼法，但到了 18 世紀，gauntlet 成為普遍的拼法。現今，大多數寫作者都使用 gauntlet，但使用 gantlet 也沒有錯，因為它在美式英語中仍很常用。然而，在 throw down the gauntlet 和 pick up/take up the gauntlet 這兩個成語中，gantlet 卻不可當作 gauntlet 的另一種拼法，否則就錯了。
