Instantly 和 instantaneously 在「立即，馬上」(at once, immediately) 的意思上幾乎可以互換且經常被互換使用，如 He replied instantly/instantaneously. (他立即回答)；Both drivers were killed instantly/instantaneously. (兩名司機當場喪生)。Instantaneously 還意為「瞬間地，即時地 (或幾乎同時地)」，如 He was hit by the car and died instantaneously. (他被車子撞了，當場死亡)。
從上面的說明實在很難分辨這兩個字到底有什麼不同，因為不管立即、馬上或瞬間、即時，意思並無明顯不同，這就是在大多數情況或一般的用法中，它們都被當作同義詞或近義詞使用的原因。不過，在科學領域，instantaneously (瞬間，即時) 係用來敘述事情發生的速度非常快，有如電光石火，而且相較於其他事情沒有可察覺或可感知的延遲，如 This indicates that though voltage changes instantly, current through inductor cannot change instantaneously. (這顯示，雖然電壓立即改變，但流經電感器的電流卻不能即時改變)。
