Safe 和 secure 這兩個經常見到或用到的形容詞均意為「安全的；沒有危險的」，有時可以互換，如 They are safe/secure from attack there. (他們在那裡沒有遭到攻擊的危險)。但在大多數情況中，它們往往不能劃上等號。譬如說，在 His little grandson returned home safe and sound. (他的小孫子平安無事地回到家裡) 這句中，safe 不能用 secure 來代替，因為 safe and sound 表示「平安無事的；安然無恙的」，為固定用語。

Secure 意為「安全的；安心的」，是指由於環境等因素而使人放心、產生安全感，或因受到保護而不受損失、損害或其他預料所及的害處，帶有不必擔心或不必害怕的含意，如 The computer system is secure from hackers. (這個電腦系統很安全，不會遭到駭客入侵)；The government’s new policies have made a lot of people feel not secure. (政府的新政策使許多人覺得不放心)；The basement is a secure hiding place. (這地下室是個安全的藏匿場所)。
Safe 和 secure 之間的主要差別在 Children are safe in their own house. (孩子在他們自己家裡是安全的) 和 Children are secure with their mother. (孩子跟他們的母親在一起會有安全感) 這兩句中更可一目了然。最後，值得一提的是，safe 和 secure 的反義詞分別為 unsafe 和 insecure。
