在 Microsoft Word 中，dependant 這個字會被劃上紅色底線，有人可能會以為自己拼錯了字。其實沒錯！只是美式英語並沒有這個字。Dependant 是英式英語特有的字，意為「受撫養的家屬或子女；眷屬」，如 All embassy staff and their dependants must be at the airport by 7 o’clock. (大使館所有人員及其眷屬必須在七點之前抵達機場)。同樣的意思在美式英語是用 dependent 來表示。
Dependent 主要用作形容詞，意為「依靠的，依賴的，仰賴的」，這項用法適用於英式和美式英語，跟動詞 depend 一樣，其後慣用介系詞 on 或 upon。例如：Taiwan will not have to be dependent on any countries again. (台灣再也不必仰賴任何國家了)；It’s very easy to become dependent on sleeping pills. (人很容易對安眠藥產生依賴性)。
總而言之，美式英語僅使用 dependent 一個字來表示形容詞「依靠的，依賴的，仰賴的」及名詞「受撫養的家屬或子女；眷屬」的意思，而英式英語形容詞也是使用 dependent，但名詞則使用 dependant；換言之，dependent 在英式英語中並無名詞的用法。例如：
- One of his dependents became dependent on alcohol. (他扶養的家屬中有一人有酒癮) (誤 － 英式英語)
- One of his dependents became dependent on alcohol. (正 － 美式英語)
