Pay through the nose 意為「花錢過多;付費過高」,與字面意思「透過鼻子付款 (繳稅)」相去甚遠。這個慣用語的起源已經不可考,但似乎與過去的某種繳稅方式有關。
公元九世紀,丹麥人攻佔愛爾蘭,以計算鼻子來普查人口並徵收鼻子稅。每個鼻子都被課徵過高的稅,因此人民係透過鼻子繳稅。傳說欠稅者會被割鼻做為懲罰,可謂「用鼻子繳稅」。但支持這項傳說的人並不多。
